When I heard that Dr Biruté Galdikas would be visiting Newcastle, I was thrilled.
It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience to hear directly from an expert on such a topic.
I wanted to focus my artistic attention on an aspect of orangutan life and not necessarily a portrait of the animal.
There is a plethora of tropical fruits to choose from as subjects.
I decided on these three: Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus), Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) and Lychee (Litchi chinensis) as I had access to these as real-life subjects. I always like to draw/paint from life if I can.
The sketches came from orangutans featured on the Orangutan Foundation Instagram page.
Adib was an orphaned orangutan and Yoko is a male orangutan who frequents camp Bulah.
Fruits in Order
Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus)
Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana)
Lychee (Litchi chinensis)
They are treats for orangutans and hopefully treats for the eyes as well.
