Stance on AI (artificial intelligence)

Here are the places I am using and not using AI in my creative process.

If any of this changes I will inform you here.

After reading this you may think that I disapprove of AI developments altogether. This is not the case.

I can see huge benefits to the integration of AI into many parts of work and society. Even for me personally.

Unfortunately, there are also many negative sides to the way AI is being used and implemented, especially within the creative industries.

Everyone needs to set their own boundaries and working parameters when it comes to any technology.

After much thought on the subject, these are the boundaries I set for myself.

I do not use AI to:

Generate any form of visual art.
Although Adobe is integrating AI generators into all of its products, I am not using them to create any visual art or concept for any visual art.
All of my image ideation comes from my own hand and mind. I try to show my process alongside my finished work and want to be as transparent and honest about this as possible.

Write any creative or informative text. Although it takes longer, I am still writing my thoughts manually and not using AI to generate or consolidate my text.

Places I am using AI:

I use an AI spelling and grammar checker.
Most writing applications now have this inbuilt AI functionality. I felt it was still worth mentioning this here as an application I use.

I will not work with:

Authors who want AI art added to their book.

Authors or illustrators who bring AI text into a book.

If I feel the work has been generated by an AI program, then I may refuse to be a part of the project.

If the author or illustrator is open about where they have used AI within their work and shows that the addition has not compromised another IP then I am open and flexible to this proposition.

Using AI to generate a mood board example for explanation purposes is something I am open to as well.
